Rear axle
August 2018
Our granddog making sure rear axle does not move! This is the only image of the rear axle I will get more. Some interesting things went on here.I will document each of the parts of the rear axle assembly
- Axle boxes
Could not afford a large enough piece of bronze so made them from steel with a split bronze bush.
- Differential
Had some problems finding suitable bevel gears - Another model engineer suggested that I try breast drill gears. So started a hunt for 3 suitable drills (those of you who only know what a cordless drill looks like they predated electric cordless drills!).
I found a pair of German made ixion drills at the local secondhand store which were of a suitable size and had the correct ratio (3 to 1) of teeth. I then started construction of the diff. I have just located a third drill so can now complete the diff. You will note that I had to bush the pinions see below.
- Wheels were already turned when I got the castings so only had to fit the brake drums which are modified Morris Mini drums.
